Tandem Computers Incorporated

Cupertino, California USA

Based in Cupertino Calif., Tandem is the leader in continuously available open, parallel processing systems; reliable client/server solutions; and enterprise networks. The company manufactures and markets a full range of systems and services, from desktop solutions to data center systems, as well as software top deliver complete customer solutions. Founded in 1974, Tandem is a Fortune 500 company with offices worldwide. Continuus/Cm and Continuus/PT are being incrementally implemented in ten UNIX-based software development teams. By 1996, Tandem expects to have standardized on Continuus for all software change management (problem tracking and task management) and configuration management.

The Challenge

Prior to using Continuus, software engineers and products release groups used a variety of SCM tools. Tandem needed a new software configuration management system to integrate development groups across the company, and streamline the software development life cycle.

Tandem's evaluation team spent more than a year specifying requirements for a next generation software development tool, and reviewed 12 different solutions before selecting Continuus. Continuus was chosen because it was the only off-the-shelf product which met the company's core requirements, including; comprehensive process management; integrated change management; complete build management; flexible software configuration and release management; open client/server architecture.

The Solution

Tandem has implemented and customized the Continuus process model to support and manage development procedures which development teams are using today and in the future. Additionally, change tracking and task management will be fully integrated for the first time, enabling developers to link problem and enhancement reports directly to a product release, ensuring a higher quality final product. Also for the first time, developers will be able to visually see key differences between versions, and automatically merge parallel versions when required.

Continuus' advanced build management functionality, including support for targeting build on platforms other than the development platform, enables Tandem to develop and test software in a cost-effective, UNIX-based environment, then perform system builds on the targeted fault-tolerant platform for compiling and final testing.

Additionally, through the rule-driven configuration management, development teams at Tandem can now quickly view and manipulate the files applicable to individual projects without impacting concurrent development projects. Developers are notified when another group is accessing a file that may affect their project, however, they are insulated from changes driven by other projects.

Tandem is currently moving to Continuus/CM 4.0. "The enhanced user interface and simplified description of build rules allows fast deployment to engineering teams and easy migration of their code," said Bill Schweitzer, program manager, SCM at Tandem Computers Incorporated. "The Vendor configuration management feature allows teams to coordinate work from third-party suppliers of source code with minimum overhead. This enhances quality and reduces development time."
